The Home Battery Scheme is a subsidy offered to South Australian households by the South Australian Government to help cover the cost of home battery system installation. The Department of Energy and Mining is offering 40,000 South Australian households the opportunity to access $100 million in State Government subsidies for home battery installations.
What is a home battery?
A home battery is an in-home energy storage unit that can store energy from renewable energy resources such as wind and solar. A home battery storage system includes a battery and an inverter, paired with existing or new rooftop solar panels. Home batteries using lithium-ion technology charge and discharge just like any rechargeable battery, except on a much larger scale. Households can install single batteries, or couple them together for larger storage capacity.
Households can use their home battery to power almost anything in their homes, depending on how much power is needed, and how much storage capacity you have. The system works by storing excess energy generated from your solar panels during the day and providing that stored energy to be used when the sun goes down.
Who is eligible to receive the subsidy?
Anyone who owns or occupies a home in South Australia can receive the subsidy. This even applies to renters who have permission from the property owner. SA Energy Concession Holders will receive a higher subsidy ($600 per kilowatt hour) than all other households ($500 per kilowatt hour). For example, a battery with 5kWh of storage could receive a $2500 subsidy, or $3000 for energy concession holders.
The subsidy will vary depending on the size of the battery and is capped for everyone at a maximum of $6000 per battery installed.
What products are eligible for a subsidy?
While a home battery system typically includes a battery and an inverter, paired with existing or new rooftop solar panels, the SA Home Battery Scheme Subsidy only applies to the battery component of the system.
Is a battery or solar system right for me?
Whilst battery storage is an exciting new technology, it’s important to consider these things before investing in a battery for your home:
• Your electricity usage: What is the size of your home and what appliances do you run?
• Cost of the battery system (including installation and maintenance): What are your expected energy savings and how long will it take to pay off the initial cost of the system?
• Existing solar panels: What battery systems work best with your existing system? Does this affect the price?
